What is a Bone Mineral Density Test?

A BMD test is an easy reliable test that measures the density, or thickness, of bones. It measures the amount of mineral (calcium) in a specific area of bone. The more mineral measured in the bone, the greater the bone density or bone mass.

Should premenopausal women have a BMD test?

Routine BMD testing is not recommended for premenopausal women. However, there are rare cases when a healthcare provider may consider a BMD test for a premenopausal woman. For example, a BMD test may be recommended for a premenopausal women taking chronic steroid medications. Steroid medications are known to cause bone loss when taken for more than three months. It is important to speak to your healthcare provider about the risks and benefits of any medication you take and most important to never stop or change the way you take your medication without your healthcare provider’s advice.
